How do I go about checking my criminal record?
I want to check my record for a DUI that happened 20 years ago, how do I go about doing that.

Go to any police station and tell them you want a copy of your C.I.&I. That's your rap sheet. They will take your prints and charge you a few dollars but they will get it for you.

If you know a conviction or plea occurred, then it is there on your record. Access to criminal history summary records maintained by the DOJ is restricted by law to legitimate law enforcement purposes and authorized applicant agencies. However, individuals have the right to request a copy of their own criminal history record from the Department to review for accuracy and completeness. Requests from third parties are not authorized and will not be processed. To receive a copy of criminal history record, complete the Live Scan Form http://ag.ca.gov/fingerprints/forms/bcia_8016RR.pdf. Take the completed form and fees to any Live Scan site for fingerprinting services, including most local police departments, sheriff's offices or any public applicant Live Scan site. If you want to challenge the contents of your criminal record once you get a copy, you must complete the "Claim of Alleged Inaccuracy or Incompleteness" which will be included with your Record Review response if there is criminal information on your record. Anyone with a criminal record can consider getting a conviction expunged; which would help in obtaining and keeping employment. A conviction can be 'expunged' from criminal records by proper application and Petition to the court, but only if there was no felony prison time sentenced, whether served or not, and if it was not for certain listed Sexual and Domestic Violence crimes, and if all terms of sentencing and at least one year of probation are completed, and if there are no new charges pending. If successful, the conviction would be withdrawn and the charges dismissed. Expungement does NOT clear, 'remove' or erase the conviction, but merely changes the record to show 'conviction reversed and dismissed by expungement'. When applying for a job in the private sector, you generally do not have to disclose a conviction if it was expunged. However, the conviction is still a 'prior' or 'strike' for purposes of repeat offense, and must be disclosed on applications for government and professional employment and licensing, bonding, security clearance, etc. The licensing agency and employer then can decide whether you are barred from licensing or employment because of the conviction.

You can run a Live Scan report to determine your criminal background. There are many private companies that run Live Scan reports that will cost you a minimal fee. You can "google" Live Scan and search for companies in your area that offer these services.

You need to get a live scan done. Contact your local police department and ask when they provide them. Generally, there are set days in which live scans are done.

The best way you can do that is to go to the DMV and get a copy of your driving record. It will show- unless the DMV dropped it off after such a long period. If you have not dealt with it for such a long period, you will have a warrant. You must get an attorney to clear this up for you.
