How much money should I expect to spend on a DUI case?

I am trying to gather as much information as possible in order to deal with my sons DUI case. I want to know about how much I should be saving to take care of this case including the court fees, the fine, getting his license back, representation and so forth.

It is VERY EXPENSIVE, Fine with court costs is about $2000 (I am assuming he is an adult). Don't hire a lawyer for more than $2500 unless your son plans to go to trial. Then negotiate a trial fee ($1000-2000 is ball park. Put THAT money in the lawyer's trust with the agreement (in writing) that if the case doesn't do to trial 100% refund of that money. A trial should not take longer than 2 days Good luck. Oh plus the cost of DUI program which is about $800 last time I checked.

If found guilty your son could expect to pay $1,800.00 to $5,000.00 in court costs, fines and penalties. An attorney would charge $2,000.00 to $5,000.00.

If you son is convicted of a DUI in court, he will have approximately a couple thousand dollars in fines and fees. If you plan on hiring an attorney, you can find an attorney to represent your son for as little as $500 or as much as $10,000. However, I would not recommend either as one is clearly too little and the other too much. I would say a fair estimate for a good DUI attorney would be anywhere from $2,500 to $5,000 for a first DUI. Also, many DUI attorney's offer payment plans if needed. (By the way, whatever the best result for your son's case may be, hiring the right DUI attorney will only serve to maximize your chances of obtaining that result). In any case, if you can set your budget in that range, then you can really focus on finding the right attorney for your son. I hope this answer was helpful. Good luck.

The amount varies, depending on who you decide to hire. You can hire a well experienced attorney and the fee will likely be high or you can hire a less experienced attorney and the fee will be low. In terms of general punishment, fines, impound fees and court fees expect to pay $1,500 to $2,000. Depending on the facts of your case, such as the blood alcohol level, this amount can increase or decrease.

Hiring a private attorney can cost anywhere between $1500 and $3000. It's important to call around and get information on attorney's rates. The court fees and fines are around $2000, his insurance could raise up to $3000 unless he gets a separate insurance policy called an SR22. It's $120 to get a restricted license and there are other minor fees.

It completely depends on whether your son opts for a jury trial. These last 3 to 5 days and an attorney can charge anywhere from $7500 to $15000 for one alone. Without a trial a typical fee is $2500 not including a DMV hearing which can cost bet $1000 to $1500 not including costs for an expert if an issue in the case warrants one.

I charge $2K to handle a first DUI (not including trial which is $1K per day). This includes handling the DMV hearing. I think this is about average - you can obviously find attorneys who charge more and those who charge less. If he pleads guilty, the fine will be $1K, then he will also have to pay for the three-month First Conviction Program, insurance increases for the SR-22 insurance, and re issuance fee ($25, I believe) for a restricted license.

A knowledgeable and effective DUI lawyer will run you $5,000 [at the very least] to $9,500, or more, depending on the facts, etc. Properly handled, there won't be other costs. If the case is lost, the fine will run about $2,000 [with assessments], the DUI program another $500, more or less, and insurance rates will sky-rocket, which is why those things should be fought. Do not fall for the ubiquitous jail-mail that shows up in the boxes of everyone arrested for DUI - that is the criminal law version of ambulance chasing, and you will most likely get a bottom-feeder who will promise much and deliver nothing, except a bill. A much smaller bill, to be sure, but then for nothing but talk.

There is no clear cut answer on the overall price tag. If convicted, the fines can be roughly $2,000-$2,500. DUI Classes can cost from $500-$1,500. Insurance rates will most likely triple the current rate. An attorney will run anywhere between $1,500-$7,500, depending on who you hire. The best thing to do is google local DUI Attorneys in your area, go in for free consultations and interview them. You should get a good feeling for who you want to help your son. Good luck.

Published estimates indicate the cost of a DUI conviction and defense is above $7,000, when taking into account the increases in insurance costs for a number of years, alternate transportation costs due to license suspensions, mandatory alcohol program costs, court fines and penalty assessments, probation and related costs, and last but not least attorney fees. Those can range upwards from a couple thousand dollars for a plea bargained outcome, to several times that to take the case to trial. For a realistic assessment and estimate, if serious about hiring counsel for this, feel free to contact me to discuss. Keep in mind a little free advice: When arrested for DUI, whether alcohol or drugs, then upon release from jail or booking the defendant is given documents that include a notice that you have only ten days to file a request with DMV for a hearing on an appeal of an automatic one-year suspension of your license imposed by DMV. That is separate and runs consecutively with any suspension that may be imposed by the court. Contact DMV and do so, timely, then appear at your scheduled DMV appeal hearing and present any supporting evidence and testimony. If you don't know how to do these things, then hire an attorney that does.

You can hire a decent lawyer to handle the case (excluding trial) for from $1,000 to $2,500. There is no reason to ever pay more than that pre-trial. Thebigger thewebsite and the more ex-D.A.'s on the staff, the fast you should run away and keep looking for a real defense attorney. Hire someone who actually appearsinCourt for you themselves (not just hires another lawyer inyourCounty to appear; which lawyer, by the way, will notcare one bit about your case), who is experienced and knows the law, and most of all - whois local to the jurisdiction in which your case will be heard. Do not hire a lawyer with an office in Los Angeles or San Bernardino counties to handle a case in Riverside! Unless you know the lawyer and it is not just some 'remote control' settlement mill who advertises in every County but just pays local lawyers to make 'special appearances'. Fines vary by County, but the usual base DUI fine is about $1,660, with added fines and fees (to the Court) of approximately $414 (booking fee) + $100 + $40 + $35 + $100 (suspended). The Work Release or Electronic Detention ("house arrest" on a GPS monitor) fee is $90 (plus a sliding scale daily fee for the GPS election). The shortest DUI class (16 weeks, if an actual DUI; possible 12-week class for a "wet reckless" = VC 23103.5 charge) costs between $450 and $550. The DMV reissue fee for the license is $125.

Fees can range from 500.00 (low budget lawyer) to 5000.00 (high price lawyer), court costs should range around 3000.00, DUI class is at least 750.00, insurance costs will vary including the cost of SR22 insurance. This does not account for the financial costs of jail time versus alterntive programs in lieu of jail and the inconvenience of a suspended driving license. Start with finding a good lawyer for a fair price and you will take most the headaches away. Good luck.

Lawyers generally charge based on their experience and expertise in DUI cases. The fees vary. I have heard of fees ranging from 1,000 to 10,000 dollars. It is hard to predict. If convicted, your son will be facing a fine of about 1,700. Alcohol school fees of several hundred. There is the ignition anti-lock device which must be installed and rented for several hundred. There are court fees of a few hundred. But the biggest hit is the increase in car insurance rates. However, the biggest financial burden of all is if he injured someone. That person could sue for punitive damages in the millions which cannot be discharged in bankruptcy. It means working for life to pay the victim's civil judgment.

The answer to that question depends on some variables pertaining to your sons case. For example, is it his first offense, second offense, etc. Are there any potential enhancement charges such as a "refusal"? Was he on probation at the time of the arrest?

Well it depends upon the outcome of the case. If you retain a DUI attorney who is experienced and you retain him to also handle the DMV part of the case, you can expect to spend about 2500 for legal fees (if the matter does not go to trial). If the DUI case is dismissed there will be no fines or other consequences other than the DMV hearing battle where his license may be suspended. The fines and other costs will depend upon the outcome of the case. IF he is found guilty of a DUI the court fines run about 2000. There is required alcohol school and the cost will depend upon the specific school and the length of the school. There will likely be in increase in car insurance that will be substantial.
